Across the Free Land

“The land which has been as common to all as the air or the sunlight was now marked out with the boundary lines of the wary surveyor.” Ovid, Metamorphosis, Book 1.

Across the Free Land

Across the Free Land tells a story by using images found on the flags and emblems of countries around the world, sometimes with additional reference to national mottos (shown in their native languages).
The images follow the adventures of a central protagonist, whose appearance changes as he visits different territories and encounters a diverse cast of characters.
These characters and elements are taken from the coat of arms of well-known countries, but also from states, overseas territories and former colonies and states who are seeking recognition.
On some occasions the images have been adapted to fit the story or to emphasise particular moments and the climax of the tale.
The complete project will reflect my view of the world as a unique whole that should not be considered in terms of the division between states, divisions that pit territories against one another and increase inequality between populations.
